New Baby Stories
September 3, 2009There is nothing more special than those first photos of your brand new baby, sweet smelling and squishy and sleepy. If you are pregnant and thinking that you would like to set up a session, now is the time! You can contact me now and let me know when your due date is. I generally schedule sessions in the first 10 to 12 days after the baby’s birth so that they are sleepy and still naturally curled up the way they were in the womb.
I will bring a good deal of stuff with me to your session – blankets of all different colors and textures, hats and other props. They generally all are used in a session because babies often soil them, but I expect that and everything I bring with me is washable. I generally allow approximately 2 hours for a newborn shoot. Often, babies have to be rocked, fed, changed, patted, and otherwise made happy. I am a mother myself so I understand and don’t mind waiting and working for the poses and shots I want to get. I normally do the majority of the shots of the baby in it’s natural state (naked) or in a diaper cover.
I mainly use natural light as my light source, so when I arrive, I will look around for the spot that lets the most natural light in, often in front of sliding glass doors or a window.
Let me know if you and/or your partner would like to be in the photos. Even if you don’t love being photographed, it’s nice to get some of you with the baby. I usually recommend that dads especially wear a plain, black shirt. If either parent is comfortable, shots with baby on dad’s bare chest or with mom chest to chest, etc. are always particularly striking. It’s a comfort level thing, though, so let me know what you’re comfortable with. Also, if you have any photographs you’ve seen that you love, let me know/direct me to them.
