Ball is Life, Baby!

There are a few things I really love about this work I do. Obviously, the cute babies. Getting to meet the amazing families I work with. But one of my favorites is the challenge of knowing that there is something meaningful that someone wants to incorporate into their session, and the creative license to work it out in my brain and bring their ideas to life. It’s sometimes very big and sometimes very small, but I do my best to honor the specialness of the request and do it justice every single time. I love seeing the parents’ faces when we do that part of their session.
With the session I’m sharing today, that “thing” was basketball. Specifically that this baby’s mama was a D1 basketball player, and his grandmama was a player herself as well as a coach. This piece whispered rather than roared, but I was happy to do this piece and have these women both feel seen.

Another part of this session that I loved was this boxing setup, below. It’s from my Rocky themed newborn set - the American flag type shorts are a nod to Rocky’s shorts, originally worn by Apollo, that Rocky wears in Rocky IV to fight Drago. I’m a gigantic, huge Rocky fan since I was a little girl, and if you know me at all, a sports fan but more specifically a Philly sports fan. When you enter my studio, you will see many different themed newborn sets that nod toward Philly sports, and even an Italian Stallion robe like Rocky’s.

The other fun and exciting part of this session for me is that the baby’s mama came with her mama. Just the two of them. When this happens, I will almost always plead with the grandmama that she needs to get into the photos with her baby and her baby’s baby. When they oblige me, my heart sings. I have a very close relationship with both my mom, and my sister, and my sister’s daughter, and it always makes me smile to see moms and daughters.

Lastly, expressions in black and white, aka “mugshots”. These are the best! We do them when the baby is awake and sometimes wind up capturing the funniest and cutest expressions.
