In West Philadelphia Born and Raised | Philadelphia Cake Smash Photos

Usually my first contact with someone wanting to have a photography session is by email. Often, by the time I respond to someone, I already want to work with them because their email was cute or nice or they said something that struck a chord with me. And then sometimes, I want to work with them because I love their idea. Those are my favorite kind of email!
Such was the case with the session that I’m posting today. When mom emailed talking about her Fresh Prince themed baby shower and wanting to extend the theme out to her baby’s first birthday cake smash session, I was IN immediately.
Then we had a phone call (the best part because of what’s coming next) where we kicked ideas back and forth like a soccer ball, kind of each adding on to the other person’s idea. I think mom was sure about using me for this plan of hers when I said, “Oh! We definitely need a cab!”
I set about gathering props and making things. The night before the session, my studio was all set up and ready to go. I kind of couldn’t sleep. Should I be admitting that? Maybe not. But it’s true.

The set, below. I made the radio and the cab. I absolutely love how they came out. (Anyone else wanting to do this theme - these are carefully stowed away in my studio closet just waiting for you.)

I have to give a major shout out to The Cupcake Sisters Bakery, who always exceed my expectations but who definitely did this theme justice with the details in this cake!

Cake and backdrop that read "The Fresh Prince". Cake is on a lime green cake stand that matches the text on the backdrop.

Mom and Dad brought Mister in an outfit that perfectly suited this theme as well. I could not love these photos any more than I do!

We also added on a splash, which is, I think, every baby’s happiest part of the cake smash! They love a tub normally, and, since it’s something they love at home, it’s a great way to get some adorable smiles while cleaning up all of the messy cake icing.

I feel like Will Smith needs to see these images, doesn’t he?
I loved executing this mama’s vision and I’d be happy to execute yours, too. If it’s cool like this one! I do book sessions in advance, especially when time is needed to create custom items for your session. Drop me a line and let’s talk about your idea! Click here to get in touch with me.
